What Does Your Toddler Need To Bring To Daycare?

Items to make your tot’s time at daycare more comfortable

Sending your toddler off to daycare or preschool for the first time can be overwhelming! While you should be sure to pack the obvious essentials—breast milk, formula or baby food (depending on your child), diapers (extremely important!), baby wipes and any medication your tot is on—it can be hard to determine what else your babe should bring. We selected our favourite items that are sure to make your tot more content and comfortable during this time spend away from home, whether they are spending just a few hours or a full day in a daycare setting.

Pack up all your little one’s daycare essentials in a colourful backpack that suits their personality. We like the sporty bag from MEC, available in multiple brilliant colours and with a roomy main compartment and sternum strap. The whimsy unicorn pack is super convenient with an insulated snack pouch, side pocket for a sippy cup, lots of space in the main pocket plus extra pockets for smaller items.

Lunch Box

Keep your little one’s food items organized and easy to find with a reusable lunch box. The silly monkey zip-up bag has a durable nylon lining that keeps food cool and prevents items from getting squished, plus a zipped back pocket for stashing napkins or wipes for post-meal cleanups. The lunch kit from Skip Hop features a sweet puppy dog face on the lid and comes with a mini snack container inside to keep dips or messy snacks separate.

Reusable Container and Snack Bags

Keep snacks either warm or cold in this insulated food jar from Skip Hop. With a charming bee design and a convenient utensil holder (spork included), your little one will love using this container for her snacks. The playful reusable bags featuring good ol’ Dr. Seuss characters are also great for snack time, plus they are a eco-friendly alternative to the plastic versions. Measuring out to 7x3.5 inches each, they are perfect for packing up veggies, cereal or crackers.

Drool Bib

While it’s probably a good idea to send a change of clothes with your little one if she’s spending the day at preschool or daycare, a stylish and functional bib can help to keep clothes clean. We love the super stylish yellow and blank printed bandana bib from Electrik Kidz that comes with a detachable pacifier clip and a snap back. The striped dribble bib from Cheeky Chompers features an absorbent middle layer and silicone teether to keep tots comfortable and their clothes free(ish) of drool.

Sippy Cup

Keep your little one hydrated throughout their day away from you with a water bottle that is both easy to travel with and easy for them to use. The Safe Sippy has many features that both kids and parents love: a protective sleeve that is easy for little hands to grip, a lid to keep things sanitary and the option to drink from the bottle as a sippy or with a straw. Boon’s fun and attractive Swig cup has an ergonomic design for little ones and a flip-top spout. We love that you can interchange the lids of the 2 cups to create different colour combos and that all pieces are dishwasher safe.

Tasty good-for-them snacks will keep them satisfied in-between meals while they are at preschool or daycare. A soft blanket will give your little one a sense of security while he’s away from you for the day. We love how adorable the lion head blanket is; your little one will have no problem lying down for naptime with it! A blankie plus stuffed animal in one, like this muslin “mussy mate,” will provide your tot with double the comfort. It’s the perfect item to cuddle up with during quiet time thanks to its bamboo material that gets even softer with each wash.
